Tales of a first home buyer - Using one to buy the other

The Dream of Homeownership

I always knew I wanted to buy a home, as soon as humanly possible. I spent a lot of my life moving from house to house, and owning my own home had become my only goal! I started saving as soon as I got my first full-time job at 18 and didn’t stop until I purchased my first home in Otaki at 21.

Taking the First Step

I bought this property off a family member, so it was fairly straightforward as I had no competition. This was strategic as I knew I couldn’t afford anywhere near the Wellington region, and I thought this was a good way to get on the property ladder. This soon became a rental as I was working in Lower Hutt and decided to go flatting.

The Journey Continues

After a few years of flatting, I decided it was no longer for me, and I wanted to purchase a property to live in. By 2018, the value of my Otaki property had gone up substantially, and I started to research what I needed to do to buy my next property.

Facing Challenges

I went directly to the bank, who I found unhelpful, and they pretty much said no and hadn't given any advice on how to get there. After talking to a few friends and family, I was referred to a mortgage broker who gathered all my information, as I found a house that a family member was selling in Wainuiomata and wanted things to move quickly before someone else bought it. They never got back to me, and I missed out!

Finding the Right Support

I was so disheartened and talked through my sorrows with a friend who then referred their husband, who was a financial adviser, and she thought that he could help. This is where my journey at Velocity Financial started. They worked quickly to set up a meeting and get a pre-approval so that I could start looking comfortably.

Finally, a Place to Call Home

After missing out on a few houses, I had an offer accepted! The house was a "doer-upper," but it was somewhere I could finally call home. I had a long settlement (3 months) as the vendors needed time to find another property. Move-in day had finally arrived, January 30th, 2019. I was so overwhelmed with this house that needed some TLC and the fact that I had so much responsibility that I bawled my eyes out. Haha.

Gratitude and Growth

But I realized how lucky I am to even have this house. I had an amazing bunch of friends and family come help give it some love and a fresh coat of paint, and I fell in love with my house again and the potential I originally saw in it.

Lessons Learned

My experience of house buying has been that you need a good team containing a financial adviser, lawyer, and real estate agent you can trust! I had such a good team I decided to join them. Working at Velocity Financial has given me even more clarity on the house buying process and the ability to help clients with my personal experience.

Manisha.

Hi, I'm Manisha. I have recently joined Velocity Financial as a member of Lance's team. I work part time in client services, where I look after existing loans by coordinating refixes and organising restructures. I'm also here to help answer any questions you have during the process of buying your home. I love the outdoors and enjoy a good hike. My favourite pass time would be working on my garden.
