23 tips for Bella turning 23

This month our gregarious Client Services Manager, the beautiful and talented Bella, turned 23. To honour this occasion we have decided to offer her 23 tips of financial health and life wisdom that we wish to impart to help her along her path.

Feel free to share this with your younger loved ones too!

1.     Remember - You buy things with your time, not with your cash.

2.     Money comes and goes but experience & memories last forever.

3.     Start saving to buy a house, now!

4.     Op-shops are heaven, who wants to pay $100 for jeans when you can get a whole wardrobe for that??

5.     Listen to your older colleagues, they’ve already made the mistakes and there is a reason they’re telling you what they’re telling you.

6.     Only buy clothes you love, love. That way you know you will wear them and not waste your $$.

7.     If you’re ever worried about something, listen to ‘Why Worry’ by Dire Straits.

8.     Read more Dr. Seuss.

9.     $1 per use rule – If you are going to buy a $100 jacket, ask yourself if you are going to wear it 100 times. If not, don’t buy it.

10.  Always blow on the pie.

11.  It costs nothing to be kind.

12.  Pay yourself first. Find a savings/investment system that suits you and your interests, then build it up week on week.

13.  Don’t go to university because you think you should or feel pressured to do so – travel and work are excellent teachers as well, and you’ll do much better if you’re there for something you really love.

14.  If something makes you happy, do it – if it doesn’t, find a different way to do it or don’t do it – life is too short to spend it doing things begrudgingly.

15.  Don’t smoke or vape -hard habits to kick, very expensive, ages you.

16.  Wear sunscreen...Even on a cloudy day.

17.  Life – the hours are long, but the years are short.

18.  Be careful about the relationships you get into, it’s easy to lose yourself when actually this is when you should be finding yourself. If everyone is telling you you’re too young to get married – listen to them!

19.  Say Yes to more… but don’t use Afterpay. Save now, buy later.

20.  Put your KiwiSaver up to 10%.

21.  If you want to feel awesome about yourself, don’t listen to people that are bringing you down. Equally, you don’t listen to people who compliment you, as both are more about how they feel, than you yourself.

22. Start reading some philosophy for a new perspective (Stoics are a good place to start)

23.  Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth, actually, never mind.. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded, but trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked.
